    HAZEL

    Corylus
    Tree of Knowlege
Ninth month of the Celtic Tree calendar, August 5th - September 1st
Ninth consonant of the Ogham alphabet - Coll

    Planet: Mercury
    Element: Air
Symbolism: Wisdom & Divination, Poetry & Science,
    Playfulness & Enchantment, Healing Arts
    Stone: Topaz, Pearl
    Birds: Crane
    Color: Orange
    Deity: Hermes, Aemgus, Artemis, Diana
    Folk Names: Coll

    Medicinal properties:
To clear a stubborn cough, finely powder the nuts and mix with water and honey.
The leaves can be used in teas to treat such ailments as varicose veins, circulatory problems, fevers, diarrhea and excessive menstrual flow.
Hazelnuts are a good source of protein, vitamin E, calcium, magnesium, and potassium.   Magickal properties:
Wands made of this wood symbolize white magick and healing. Forked sticks are used to find water or buried treasure. If outside and in need of magickal protection quickly draw a circle around yourself with a hazel branch. To enlist the aid of plant fairies, string hazelnuts on a cord and hang up in your house or ritual room. Magically, hazel wood is used to gain knowledge, wisdom and poetic inspiration.

In 19th century Germany, it was thought that there were witches beneath the bark of hazel trees - hence only peeled branches were allowed in churches.

This is the best time of year to focus on gaining wisdom and absorbing knowledge. Cast spells to heighten your senses and concentration.

Hazel catkins can aid in your favorite Spell for Love:
Light a red or pink candle and gather some catkins of the Hazel tree (the timing would be perfect for around Valentines day) and wrap them in a piece of red or pink tissue paper. Hold it in your hand over your heart as you recite your incantation. Burn the bundle while visualizing your intent.

Tree Magick - by Gillian Kemp

The answer to a dilemma is imminent. The Hazelnut is a magical tree for relaying messages, which is why a Y-shaped Hazel branch is used for divination. You will crack a situation: the Hazelnut tree bestows powers of wisdom, symbolized by the cracking of the nutshell to get to the nourishment inside. The nut and shell also represent the heart within the body and female fertility, because the nut is like a baby inside a mother's womb. With such life-giving qualities, this tree is an auspicious sign that love and new projects have the magical ingredients for success. Male and female flowers, being borne on separate trees, forecast a lover's meeting.

    ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

The air surrounding hazel trees is said to be magically charged with the quicksilver energy of exhilaration and inspiration.

To dream of a Hazelnut tree predicts wealth as well as unexpected good fortune.

LESSON OF HAZEL - from The Wisdom of Trees by Jane Gifford
The Hazel encourages us to seek out information and inspiration in all things and emphasizes the value of the enquiring mind and of learning of all kinds. Just as the hazel concentrates all its goodness and its continued existence in the kernel of its fruit, so we attain wisdom by reducing knowledge down to its purest form and passing it on down the ages. Through meditating on the essence of wisdom, we gain creative inspiration. Like the limbs of the hazel, we must remain pliant in our approach to learning. Concentrated thought in an open mind can, like the hazel, become a connection with the divine source of all things. The hazel teaches us the noble arts of learning, teaching, communication, and healing.   ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

    The Great Goddess
    Diana

image from The Oracle of the Goddess

Diana is a Goddess of the Women. She was the Roman Goddess who was revered as one with the Greek Goddess Artemis. Her name is derived from "light" and she may have been honored as a sun and moon Goddess in ancient times. Often she is prayed to as "Diana Trivia, the triple Goddess."  She reminds us to remember our own inborn wisdom and humanity. She tell us: "You are so much more than you think." Protect your own spirit growth, and trust that what is born of you will grow wings, even if, right now they seem invisible.

    ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

    Go deeply and remember
    the web of creation
that holds us all in fluctuating harmony
Breathe in and taste the sunlight
which warms the twists and forks of your veins,
your blood made up of stones sunk within the earth
which grew the grains you feast upon
    these things your infinite essence
the arched grey branches, skin rough and leathered
upon fruit trees that drop their children down
to nourish your flesh with sweet devotion...
Stretch, and know you are everything
becoming more open with each breath
for you are the laughter of your friends
the tears of your enemy, the courage of your ancestors,
the sweat of those you've worked beside
intermingled all the scents and smells of every room
and every meadow you've ever stood inside in all your lives
Every place where you've exchanged smiles with something
    one moment as every moment
holds the force of ancient filaments
weaving light through and in and out your soul
as oceans of time take tide below the moon
    These cycles too are you
never separating from the special tones your voice explores
uniqueness the gift of your parents and grandparents
    and great grandparents,
their love the color of your eyes
and then behind their veils the blackness sings
your crystal sight beginning to rainbow out
    into geometric spiraled fibers
    supporting, flexing, holding, tensing,
    being, breaking, becoming.
We are this web of ancientness and love divined
breathing in and out we release
knowing the power and beauty that is constantly in us,
out of us, and around us.

    Celtic Moon Sign for HAZEL
The hazel produces its nuts in fall, after having spent the year building the inner strength to protect them. The shell of this nut is so hard, in fact, and contains its treasure so well, that is was the inspiration for the phrase "in a nutshell."
Born under the sign of the hazel tree, you also have an inner treasure to offer - the fruits of you knowledge. Your wisdom and ability to communicate ideas make you capable of transforming the thoughts and opinions of others. Be careful how you wield your word-wizardry.

Born under this sign, you are wise and have the ability to communicate ideas, making you capable of transforming the thoughts and opinions of others.   Weave hazel twigs into a crown. Put this on your head and wish very hard. Your wish may come true!   Twigs of Hazel are placed in window frames to protect the house against lightning, and three pins of hazel wood driven into your house will protect it from fire.   Hazel wood is excellent for making all purpose magickal wands.

    Magickal properties:
Heather may open portals between this world and the faery world,
where the Fae of this flower are especially attracted to shy people.
White heather is the luckiest heather and protects against violent assault, especially rape.
Sleeping on a pillow stuffed with this magick herb can bring dreams foretelling good fortune.
Burned outside with fern, it brings rain, and in Ireland, it has been used to conjure the spirits of the dead.

    HEATHER ALE
    1 gallon heather tops
    3.5 cups sugar
    3.5 cups malt extract
    28.5 pints water
    4 envelopes dried yeast

    1. Cut the heather tops with scissors when in full bloom, but not overblown, and boil them in 28.5 pints water for nearly an hour.
    2. Strain through a jelly bag on to the malt extract and sugar and stir until dissolved. Add remaining water and, when lukewarm, add the dried yeast.
    3. Cover with a cloth and leave in a warm place for five or six days. Siphon into screw-top bottles, adding one teaspoon of sugar to each.
    4. Leave until clear before drinking and always decant carefully into a jug to avoid sediment. Heather ale takes longer to clear than other ales, so be patient.

LESSON OF THE HEATHER - from The Wisdom of Trees by Jane Gifford

Heather is a symbol of passionate love, of sacrifice, and self-control. In the first place, heather represents enthusiasm and sensual pleasure, and the benefits that can be enjoyed from spontaneous self-expression. But within this lust for life and exhilaration lies a deeper lesson of the consequences that may arise out of unbridled passion. The Celts believed that you are always totally responsible and accountable for the outcome of your actions, so you were wise to be sure of your own true nature before totally abandoning yourself to the potent delights of heather ale and the pleasures that it could bring. Unchecked, heather is short-lived and unproductive but if burned yearly to the ground, it re-grows with fresh vigor. The lesson of the heather is that a necessary balance must exist between self-expression and self-control for both to be enjoyable and effective.

In the mythic cycle of the Goddess, the Maiden Goddess experiences the joy of union with Her creative, sexual, sensual Self and begins to manifest Her creations. Thus, this holiday begins the Maiden Goddess's transition to the cycle of the Mother Goddess as Maker/Creatrix.
Honor and celebrate the many ways you manifest the creativity in your life. Regardless of whether a woman physically gives burth, she becomes "Mother" when she nurtures, sustains and protects life, human or other species, through her life's work and activism. Planet: Jupiter and Mars
    Element: Water
Symbolism: Sovereignty, rulership, power, Strength & Endurance, Generosity & Protection, Justice & Nobility, Honesty & Bravery
    Stone: Diamond

Deity: The Dagda, The Green Man, Janus, Diana, Cybele, Hecate, Pan
    Sabbat: Summer Solstice (Litha)
    Folk Names: Jove's Nuts, Juglans

    Medicinal properties:
The medicinal park of the Oak is its bark, because of the strong astringent properties. Internally as a tea it helps fight diarrhea and dysentery. Externally it can be used to treat hemorrhoids, inflamed gums, wounds, and eczema.

    Magickal properties:
Dreaming of resting under an oak tree means you will have a long life and wealth. Climbing the tree in your dream means a relative will have a hard time of it in the near future. Dreaming of a fallen oak means the loss of love. If you catch a falling oak leaf you shall have no colds all winter. If someone does get sick, warm the house with an oakwood fire to shoo away the illness. Carry an acorn against illnesses and pains, for immortality and youthfulness, and to increase fertility and sexual potency. Carrying any piece of the oak draws good luck to you (remember to ask permission and show gratitude.)

King Arthur's round table was made from a single cross section of a large Oak.

It is tradition for the Litha fire to be oak wood representing the God, since this is the time of year when oak reaches its Zenith power.
The Oak trees essence helps boost energy levels and the ability to manifest our goals.

The tree's roots mirror its branches and stretch as far below ground as the branches do above...

Witches often danced beneath the Oak Tree for ritual. The druids would not meet for ritual if there was not an Oak tree present.
Idols were made from Oak wood.

There is no end to the fulfillment of many more dreams. Your blessing cannot be prevented, because heaven and fate have preordained your great success.  If you sit under an Oak tree, you may see an angel sent to give you a message. You may instead hear an answer whispered in the rustling of the Oak's leaves or its hollow trunk. Like the Oak, you are hardy and anchored by a network of roots. Those destined for you will come.

LESSON OF THE OAK - from The Wisdom of Trees by Jane Gifford

The oak represents courage and endurance and the protective power of faith. The tree's noble presence and nurturing habit reassured ancient peoples that, with the good will of their gods, their leader, and their warriors, they could prevail against all odds. As the Tree of the Dagda, the oak offers protection and hospitality without question, although its true rewards are only apparent to the honest and brave. The ancient Celts deplored lies and cowardice. To be judged mean spirited could result in exclusion from the clan, which was one of the most shameful and most feared of all possible punishments. Like the oak, we would do well to receive without prejudice all those who seek our help, sharing what we have without resentment or reservation. The oak reminds us all that the strength to prevail, come what may, lies in an open mind and a generous spirit. Inflexibility, however, is the oak's one weakness and the tree is prone to lose limbs in storms. The oak therefore carries the warning that stubborn strength that resists will not endure and may break under strain.

Kele-De is an Irish goddess also know as Ceile De. Some even believe she is a corruption of the Indian Goddess, Kali.
She is a crone Goddess who rules over feminine power and sex magick, and her all-female following (known as Kelles) was allowed to flourish by the early church. Their High Priestess reserved the right to take any and all lovers they chose.
In an effort to destroy her memory, an early sect of Irish and Scottish monks adopted her name.

The oak tree endures what others cannot. It remains strong through challenges, and is known for being almost immortal, as is often attested to by its long life and ability to survive fire, lightning strikes, and devastation. If you were born under this sign, you have the strength of character and purpose to endure, too - no matter what your challenges. Tree Magick - by Gillian Kemp

All will be well for you. The Hawthorn has magical powers to ward off evil. A happy turning point is forecast. At dusk on May Eve, candles are lit on the Hawthorn, or May tree as it is also known, to welcome Summer. Bright gifts bringing happiness are coming; so, too, are positive signs. An upsetting situation is improving because the Hawthorn tree offers numerous medicinal remedies. But this twiggy thorny tree, with its white-stalked flowers with red anthers, also advises caution. Christ's crown of thorns was said to be of Hawthorn and, being the color of blood and bandages, traditionally it is unlucky to bring May blossom into the home.

LESSON OF THE HAWTHORN - from The Wisdom of Trees by Jane Gifford
The blossoming of the Hawthorn marks the certain end of the dark days of winter and the return of the procreative forces of nature to the fullness of spring. The beautiful white flowers give cause for celebration of nature's capacity for renewed life and love, and for the wonders of lovemaking, conception, and childbirth. For the Celts there was no shame attached to these natural processes. They were revered and respected as an essential part of life, and as a sacred expression of the human capacity for love.

In my yard Her heart sings to us
    in scent and color;
    poppies, red, remembrance
    of brutality and holy blood
    violet lavender
    shaped like silent tears
    and used for soothing
    ivy, ever verdant,
    holds to walls

    the queenly rose
    who calms our troubled skin

As I bring this bouquet -

    Celtic Moon Sign for Hawthorn
The hawthorn is a small tree that was often used for hedging, and it has a mixed reputation. Known to be both a sign of fertility and death, it was said to contain the knowledge of both reproduction and transformation. Both of these p rocesses take time - and if you were born under the sign of the hawthorn, you have an innate understanding of both the importance of process and the necessity for change. Your challenge is to use that understanding to guide you when undertaking new starts - don't rush. Wait, and prepare carefully.

Tree Magick - by Gillian Kemp

Your fertile inner strength, like that of the Willow, is your inexhaustible flexibility to bend around obstacles. Your desires can be woven into shape, as the Willow's pliable shoots are used to make baskets. Magic wands are made from Willow, so what you have in mind has all the magical ingredients for success. You can tell your secret to a Willow and make wishes. The male and female catkins, which grow on separate trees, signify a lovers' meeting for you. The bright-green leaves of Spring forecast celebrations, fresh opportunities, and speedy growth. The honey-bearing catkins symbolize the wisdom of spiritual self-improvement, and sweet things for you.

LESSON OF THE Willow - from The Wisdom of Trees by Jane Gifford

The watery willow encourages the expression of deeply buried feelings, easing sadness through tears and grieving, and teaching the consequences of love and loss in matters of the heart. The willow reminds us of the need to let go sometimes, to surrender completely to the watery world of the emotions and the subconscious, so that we may be carried toward a deeper understanding of our inner-most feelings, toward a better appreciation of our hidden motives and secret fears and desires. Any suppressed and unacknowledged emotions can be a major cause of stress and illness. Through emotional expression, and through the sharing of feelings of ecstasy and pain, our ancestors believed they could help heal the human spirit. The willow enables us to realize that within every loss lies the potential for something new.

Let the beauty you love be what you do

We often blind ourselves to beauty precisely because it inspires us to go beyond ourselves.
Today, find only beauty, especially when your first instinct is to be critical of someone, something, or some opportunity.

    The Great Goddess

    Flora

Flora is a Roman Goddess of Flowers, Love, youthful pleasure, and Spring. Her name means "plant life" because of her connection to the plants, especially blossoming flowers in Spring, which are also symbolic of the human spirit that respects and appreciates beauty itself.
The Floralia, or Florales Ludi was a six-day festival in her honor.

Fair Flora! Now attend thy sportful feast,
    Of which some days I with design have past;
A part in April and a part in May
    Thou claim'st, and both command my tuneful lay;
And as the confines of two months are thine
To sing of both the double task be mine.
Latin poet Ovid, Fasti, v, 185, for Flora (Floralia) Apr 28 - May 3

Beltane is the ancient Celtic festival of fire, fertility and love. At the height of spring, when all of nature bursts into blossom, we celebrate our bodies, the pleasure we can evoke in one another, and the love that we can kindle. "All acts of love and pleasure are my rituals," says The Charge of the Goddess. The Goddess blesses all forms of love, all the different modes of attraction and deep connection - sexual love of all persuasions, friendship, the love of parent and child, love of trees and flowers and flowing water, love of truth, beauty and justice. At Beltane, we dance the Maypole. The twining ribbons of many colors remind us of the many aspects of love. We light a fire, and jump the flames with lovers, friends, circle-mates, to bless and cleanse our relationships. We wear wreaths of flowers, to celebrate the flourishing life around us.

Willow Wife Heitaro loved the willow tree that grew close to his hut. As the world judged riches he had none, but the tree was treasure and temple and company enough for him, and each new season of the year seemed more beautiful than the last. When the wind blew through its branches, no music was finer. One day the villagers came with their choppers, claiming they needed the wood to build a bridge. Heitaro offered to find them some other wood, if they promised not to touch the Willow. He scoured the land and returned with some wood, and the villagers left, leaving the Willow unharmed. That night as the moonlight shimmered on its leaves he stood beneath the willow branches and gave his thanks to the gods that the tree had been spared. As he prayed, he saw something move in the shadows. He turned for a closer look and saw a beautiful young woman standing there. He bowed and apologized for disturbing her, backing away, believing she was there waiting for her lover. Each night after she was there, waiting for her lover, and Heitaro at last realized that is was he himself she came to be with. They were married, and a child soon followed. Every night they prayed together by the willow tree. One day, the emperor To-Ba ordered that a temple to Kwannon, the goddess of mercy, be built for the villagers. They wanted the wood of the willow tree, and this time they would not be convinced otherwise. This made Heitaro very sad, however he realized how blessed he was with his wife and daughter, that he believed he could endure the loss of his willow tree. The villagers began to cut down the willow tree. The willow wife cried out "Husband, the room is growing dark!" She fell to the ground and covered her face with her hands. Heitaro saw her limbs twisting and turning as though to avoid blows. He found he could do nothing to help her. He and his daughter watched as the willow wife lay dying. When the last blow on the tree was struck, he was alone with his daughter.   Adapted from "Myths of the Sacred Tree" by Moyra Caldecott. Based on a Japanese folktale, retold by Iyanaga Mitsuyo, and quoted in Meinrad Craighead, The Sign of the Tree: Meditations in Images and Words.

Celtic Moon Sign - Willow Moon The willow seeks out water, and is often found near streams or above natural underground wells. Like no other, this tree is associated with the Moon, in all her phases - and so symbolizes the change of our feelings and "moods" as time passes. Born under the sign of the willow, you are an instinctive creature - in fact, you often react primarily from your "gut response" rather than on intellectual information. Watch the rhythm of your moods carefully and pay attention to your dreams. Their symbolism will help you navigate throughout life.
